THE EVIDENCE OF NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES

There is a large body of clinical evidence, albeit subjective and arguable, in which people testify to out of body experiences, encounters with bright lights, long tunnels, angelic guides, and visions of heaven or hell. These experiences indicate that many people approach death with the sense that it’s the beginning of another journey.

IT’S WRITTEN ON OUR HEARTS

King Solomon said that God has "set eternity in the hearts of men" Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV). All of us long for something more than this world can give. There’s an emptiness, an inner void in us, that no amount of work, sex, alcohol, music, chocolate, or other pleasures can fully satisfy.

WE LONG FOR JUSTICE

Life isn’t always good. While we encounter happiness, beauty and harmony we also experience pain, hardship, and horror. If there’s nothing beyond the grave there’s nothing to offset inequality and suffering. King Solomon said, "I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun . . . and I declared that the dead . . . are happier than the living" Ecclesiastes 4:1-2 (NIV).

THE BIBLE PREDICTS IT

Daniel, an Old Testament prophet, said that "multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt" Daniel 12:2 (NIV). Jesus also spoke about life after death. In Matthew 10:28 He says, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell" (NIV).

CHRIST’S RESURRECTION

The greatest evidence for the existence of life after death is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was scourged, crucified on a cross, pronounced dead by a Roman soldier, and buried in a sealed tomb. Three days later He rose from the dead, hundreds of people saw Him over a period of 40 days, and then He ascended into heaven where He sits alongside the Father (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:3-7).

SO WHAT?

Jesus asks this question: "What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?" (NIV). If you agree with the evidence for life after death, you need to know that Christ died as a ransom for your sin. Your soul can be saved. You can be guaranteed an eternity with God. But for this to happen you must believe in Christ’s death and resurrection and ask forgiveness for your sin. The salvation Christ offers is a free gift. Failure to embrace Christ through faith forfeits your soul to an eternity without God.
